Logistics challenges could be opportunity for Indiana

Carol D’Amico, CEO of our advanced manufacturing and logistics initiative Conexus Indiana, makes an interesting point in a recent Indianapolis Business Journal article chronicling some of the tough times faced by transportation logistics companies these days.

The IBJ piece focuses on the struggles of trucking companies within the logistics sector to cope with high fuel prices and a lagging national economy.  But to Carol, these challenges may spell an opportunity for Indiana, as our central location makes us the perfect location for distribution hubs to minimize drive times and fuel consumption.

“The days of putting the big distribution centers in the four corners of the country are probably over,” she says.

It’s an excellent point when you consider that an estimated 75% of the nation’s population and business establishments are within a day’s truck drive of Central Indiana.  What better way to save on transportation costs than locating closer to the bulk of your customers?
